How music influences our moods, choices and minds

Music has an incredible power over our emotions, our behavior and even our decisions. Whether you're listening to an energetic playlist before a workout or a gentle melody to relax, it's clear that music plays a central role in our daily lives. But how does this influence play out in practice? Let's find out how music impacts our choices, our moods and our minds.
1. Music and mood management
Music has the power to regulate our emotions. Indeed, some songs have the ability to elevate our mood, while others can provoke a feeling of calm or melancholy.
- Boosting energy: A catchy tune, such as a fast rock or pop beat, can instantly boost our energy and motivation. For example, listening to a dynamic song before a sports session can improve our performance by reducing the feeling of fatigue. It's a bit like coffee... but for the ears.
- Calming the mind: Conversely, slower, softer sounds, such as jazz or classical music, can soothe us and reduce stress and anxiety. These sounds are often used in therapies, such as music therapy, to promote relaxation and enhance well-being. Perfect for forgetting that you have 173 unread e-mails.
2. Music and decision-making
Music influences not only our moods, but also our choices and decisions, sometimes unconsciously. This phenomenon is particularly exploited in marketing and advertising, where music is used to guide our behavior.
- Effect of soundscape in stores: Supermarkets or fashion boutiques often play specific tunes to influence the pace of your shopping. For example, slow music will encourage customers to relax and take their time, while more dynamic music can encourage impulse buying by creating a more energetic environment.
- Emotional decisions: Listening to a sad song can make us more introspective, even philosophical. Ever questioned your whole life after hearing Someone Like You? You're not alone.
3. Music and concentration

Music also influences our productivity - but not just any music.
- Wordless music for concentration: Classical pieces, instrumental music or soft electronic music compositions are ideal for improving concentration without disrupting our workflow. These sounds promote a state of "flow", where we feel more productive and less likely to be distracted.
- Music for creativity: On the other hand, more dynamic rhythms or more original tunes can awaken our creativity. They help the mind to wander, to see things differently, and to think outside the box. No wonder so many artists and designers always have a playlist on hand to get them in the right mood.
4. Music and social relations
Music is also a social bond. It creates memories, connections and sometimes... endless debates about the best song of all time (spoiler: it's not Baby Shark).
- Shared music strengthens bonds: Singing off-key in the car or dancing the night away to an old song creates memories. And some funny videos too.
- The effect of concerts and festivals: to attend a concert or festival is to experience music in collective mode. The energy of the crowd, the voices raised together, the smiles shared... all this creates a real sense of unity. It's the kind of atmosphere that makes it easy to meet new people, and leaves memories that stay with you for a long time (and often in your photo gallery too).
5. Music and mental well-being

Last but not least, music is a valuable ally for mental health. And unlike chocolate, it has no side effects on the scales.
- Reducing stress and anxiety: soft music has a real super-power. It lowers cortisol - the notorious stress hormone that makes us cringe at the slightest annoyance. Studies have shown that music activates certain areas of the brain linked to emotions and pleasure. In other words, a good tune can really boost your mood and lighten your spirits - a bit like a ray of sunshine in your ears. In short, a good playlist is like herbal tea for the brain.
- Self-esteem boost: Some songs are like a motivational speech. One listen and you're ready to conquer the world (or at least empty your inbox).
Music is more than just entertainment. It influences our mood, our decisions, our productivity and our mental well-being. Whether to motivate, relax or share a moment with others, it acts as a veritable conductor of our daily lives. So, the next time you launch a playlist, think about it: it's not just a song... it could be your superpower for the day.
